For website owners
Instant comments for your website
Give every public page its own CommentThe.net conversation. Add a live, linked comment count in two lines of code—without building a database, accounts or a comment system.
Last updated 18 October 2026Want your website to be commented on?
The widget shows a simple message such as “This page has 2 comments on CommentThe.net”. The number updates automatically and the whole message links to CommentThe.net.
Visitors can follow the count to read that page's public discussion without installing anything. The free extension lets them join in and discover conversations on websites all over the world. Your website only requests the public count, so it does not receive comment text or account information.
Add it to your site
Paste these two lines wherever you want the linked count to appear:
<a data-commentthenet-count href="https://commentthe.net/conversation">
See this page on CommentThe.net
</a>
<script src="https://commentthe.net/comment-count.js" defer></script>That is all most sites need. The widget uses the page's canonical address when one is present and otherwise uses the current address. It automatically handles “1 comment” and “2 comments”.
Make it match your website
The widget is an ordinary link, so you can style it with your own CSS. For example, add a class to the link and choose its colour, spacing, font and border just as you would for any other link.
<a class="my-comment-link" data-commentthenet-count
href="https://commentthe.net/conversation">
See this page on CommentThe.net
</a>If a page should use a different discussion address, add data-commentthenet-url="https://example.com/page" to the link.
For developers: the public API
GET https://api.commentthe.net/public/v1/comment-count?url=PAGE_URL
Supply one complete public http or https URL. The response contains only its canonical address and a non-negative comment count.
{
"version": "1",
"url": "https://example.com/article",
"count": 2
}- Request the count at most once per page view and cache it where practical.
- Use the canonical page URL so tracking parameters do not split the count.
- Expect
400for invalid or private URLs and429for excessive traffic. - The endpoint is read-only and never returns comments or account details.
